Dark scarlet purple. Fresh aromas of soft licorice and blackberries. Faintly nutty. As it airs the nose becomes warm and lusious. The dark berry flavours are full bodied and rich, but underripe. Still youthfull, with greenish tannins and astringent acid - puckering in the mouth. Long and reasonably balanced finish. I like the fact that it is a little bit edgy and difficult with plenty of interesting corners to explore.
Grimaldi’s deeply-flavored 2005 Dolcetto d’Alba (from a plot near the Monforte/Dogliani border) is a terrific example of old-vine Dolcetto. It is a big, structured wine, with a well-defined core of fruit, great length and an authoritative personality. Anticipated maturity: 2007-2012.
The wine gives aromas of cherry, blackberry, mushroom, mountain herb, a range of floral notes, and some peppery spice. On the palate berries and cherries form the core of the fruit, but these are swathed in earth, bark, dried leaves, and cocoa along with a back note of prune.
