Clear red. Aromas of spicy red cherry. A little dry pepper. Juicy and bright in the mouth with Zesty acids and fine grained tannins. Flavours of toasted black currant and cherry. I have to say it - a tic of licorice too. Medium bodied. Long finish with acid lingering at the end. I like the bright juicy fruitness of this wine which transforms quickly into a puckery tang. Good balance and easy drinking.

Brimming with spicy dark fruit character and framed by velvety tannins, our Robert Mondavi Private Selection 2002 Zinfandel tastes great with barbecue, pasta, pizza, steak and just about any boldly-flavored foods. Excellent balance makes this wine food-friendly and easy to enjoy. Zinfandel has a natural affinity to California’s sunny climes. We selected Zinfandel grapes from California’s North and Central Coast appellations to give the wine soft, smooth layers of wild cherry and plum, accented with violet and aromatic spice notes. The majority of grapes came from Mendocino County, in the North Coast appellation, where Zinfandel develops lush fruit character in the sunny foothills and valleys. We complemented these grapes with Zinfandel grown in Central Coast vineyards, about 350 miles to the south, to add peppery tones. To enhance the vibrant hue and spiciness, we added a dash of Syrah from Monterey County.

Vintage
Overall, California’s 2002 vintage experienced a cool, dry spring and summer that led to lighter crops with smaller berries, for wines of fabulous concentration. The distance between the northernmost (Mendocino) and southernmost (San Luis Obispo) vineyards selected for this wine is more than 350 miles, so the respective growing seasons were significantly different. In Mendocino County, rainfall was average with 38”, although a significant amount of rain fell in December and spring was relatively dry. Sunny, warm temperatures prevailed through summer. September brought warm periods of very low humidity, further concentrating flavors. Monterey and San Luis Obispo Counties experienced lighter than average winter and spring rainfall, ranging from 8 to 15 inches. Lower-than-average temperatures during the summer and fall prolonged ripening and gave Zinfandel grapes time to develop intense flavors.
