Medium red in hue, with a cloudy touch. On the nose you notice fresh strawberry and cherry, rosemary and new leather but not overly fruity. The grapes were well ripened at harvest. Very nice balance on the palate, with fine grained tannins, medium acids and tangy toasted fruits. Smooth and medium in length with perhaps a little too much alcohol on the back end. Mellow, not full bodied or pushy. Keep a couple of years, no more, since the fruit wont hold out. As it airs new notes appear such as vanilla and apple.

Intense ruby-red colour, delicate perfume, elegant, harmonious, full-tasting fruity and vanilla tones. A very versatile wine going well with red meats and seasoned cheeses but is not challenged by elaborate dishes either. After typical processing with the grape skins for 12 - 15 days the wine is kept in medium-size Slavonian oak casks and smaller French oak barrels for about 8 -10 months during which time malolactic fermentation occurs.

Spread out to the south of Montepulciano lie the tracts of land with their traditional farmhouses that make up the estate of Poggio Alla Sala that was once owned by the nobleman Pietro Bonci-Casuccini a brilliant agricultural entrepreneur and erudite etruscanologist.

Toward the end of the 1700s Poggio Alla Sala was already developing agronomics with particular interest in the cultivation of olives and vines.
In 1819 the estate recieved a prized letter of award and a gold medal from the Accademia dei Georgofili and from the Regio Governo di Siena.

The careful selection of Prugnolo Gentile and Canaiolo Nero, the excellent soil composition, and the wonderful exposure create the acclaimed Vino Nobile Di Montepulciano. In the 1960s Poggio alla Sala collected numerous prizes and mentions both nationally and internationally. Today Luca and Gionata Gattavecchi , the present owners, are carrying on the winemaking traditions, extending the cultivated lands and vines with continuing passion, respect and dedication to the environment while producing the best wines.
