Very deep red. Thick rich warm dark berries. Vegetative. Stong acids, dark ripe fruit, fine grained tanins. Fruity but not overly sweet. Slight taste of cloves. Some say Ginger, grapefruit. Long. The nose is a bit more promising than the taste. Nicely balanced. Not too overbearing but still hefty.

By contrast, Ralph Fowler’s winemaking career began 30 years ago at Tyrrell’s. Much later he left Leconfield in Coonawarra to establish his own family winery, Ralph Fowler Wines, at Mt Benson. You drive to the recently-built limestone cottage past lyre-trellised vines. Here you may be greeted by Ralph and Deborah Fowler’s daughter, Sarah Squire, herself a winemaker with her own label, Frog Island, under the Ralph Fowler Wines banner. Brother James “keeps the vineyard under control”. The vineyard, begun in 1998, grows sauvignon blanc, viognier, merlot, cabernet sauvignon and shiraz.
