An attractive dark clear scarlet. I like the nose on this one. Pepper and cedar with cassis and I think mulberry. Strong tangy acid without being sour, with toasted dark fruits. Tannins are fine but a little subdued. Finish is long and quite balanced. This is great - love it.

We drank this bottle over two days, the first evening the wine benefited from 1 1/2 hours decanting. The nose showed floral components, black currant, plum, strawberry, dust, and herbs (funnily enough, the herbaceous component smelled exactly like the German herbal liqueur "Jaegermeister"). The floral component was reflected on the palate, together with currant, cherry, plum, herbs, tobacco leaf, and hints of vanilla and liquorice. The finish had o.k. length, was sour and somewhat flat with mouth-watering acidity. The wine had a slightly thin mouth-feel. The alcohol was present on the nose and on the palate. There was a lot going on in this wine, insofar an interesting experience, but it never really found its balance. May be it would benefit from another one or two years in the cellar.

Dark cloudy red purple. Nice full complex aromas of rich ripe raspberry with flowery notes. chewy toasted dark berries with medium grained tannins & well balanced acids. Very long fruit dominated. A nice strong fruity wine with plenty of character.

Notes
Alcohol: 14%
Barrel Aging: 15 Months
Vineyard location and profile: The grapes for this “sottozona Nizza” are sourced from some wonderful vineyards with South South-West exposure located in “Martlet” district, in the commune of Nizza Monferrato, province of Asti.

2003 is the first vintage, coming from our wine estates, obtained to produce a “sottozona Nizza” with Barbera d’Asti Superiore appellation.

Vinification and ageing: Vinification is traditional, with a 15 day maceration on the skins and a 28-30oC fermentation, followed quickly by the onset of malolactic.

The wine then matures for about 15 months in small oak. During the ageing in wood the Barbera, acquires a multi-layered depth of flavour and character, evolving into a powerfully and full-bodied wine.
