The second wine of Gruaud-Larose. There is some appeal on the nose here, the wine is clearly just beginning to show some secondary characteristics. Notes of iron, and a rather reserved and lean layer of red fruit. On the palate there is a nice weight, and it still shows a pile of tannin. Clean finish. In all honesty I am a touch disappointed as the grand vin is monumental in this vintage, but this is fairly good nevertheless. I also think it has the potential to show better in the future. From the 2007 CIVB tasting. 15+/20 (October 2007)

The 2000 is a brilliant, clear almost black colour. The powerful nose reveals notes of wood, brown tobacco, fruit, and a little prune mixed with fresh red cherries. A true thoroughbred with a great deal of charm. Round and full-bodied in the mouth, fairly long. The tannins, which need a little more maturity, support a structure that if full of fruit. An attractive and distinguished second wine, which gains fame for its wonderful expression of the region’s character.

The wine is full bodied, but elegant with lots of fruit when young. The wine ages very well and develops all the characteristics of a great Bordeaux. The second wine of one of the best performing Second Growths shares many of the characteristics of its Grand Vin but offers superb value. Ch. Gruaud Larose is traditionally a good keeper; the Sarget, whose name comes from a previous shareholder, needs some time but not as long. Drinking from 2006-2011

An exceptional year.
2000 was moderately hot with an excess of sunshine and humidity.
The heavy rainfall that continued until the beginning of July justifiably caused concern that the vines’ growth would continue for too long, but a very hot July and August brought growth to a stop, and enabled the grapes to accumulate the necessary sugar and phenols. The September harvests were spread out, which made it possible to pick healthy grapes of a quality that is rarely achieved. The success of a vintage such as 2000 lies in the correlation between the accumulation of sugars, aromatic substances and phenolic compounds.
